ILLEGAL DUMPSITE CLEANUP
Environmental Site Assessment Remediation

Project Description:
A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment of the Delaware Electric Cooperative Inc. Fairmount Substation revealed a portion of property being used for short dumping by residents, contractors and industries of Sussex County, Delaware. Prior to purchasing the property, Delaware Electric Cooperative Inc. required that the property be restored to original condition.

The project consisted of donning Level "B" personal protective equipment and conducting an inventory of hazardous/nonhazardous waste deposited in the wetlands along Grubby Neck.

The inventory yielded oils, greases, thirty 55 gallon drums of waste pesticides, gas cylinders and the names of potentially responsible parties. In addition, hundreds of nonhazardous waste items were identified.

All wastes were removed and disposed of legally. The wetlands and embankment were restored utilizing erosion control methods and planting appropriate species of vegetation. The restored area currently serves as home for Marsh Wrens.
